William Turgoose lived in Goole for much of his mature life but
he clearly wanted to come home to be buried amongst his ancestors. He
is buried in Hatfield cemetery because there was no cemetery in Stainforth
at that time. His memorial reads:-
"In memory of William Turgoose of Goole ship owner, born May 10th
1813 died July 5th 1873. Also Ann widow of the above Born March 20 th
1815 died May 7th 1896 Also Susannah the beloved daughter of William
and Ann Turgoose born December 5th 1841 died February 23rd 1843. Also
four children who died in infancy".
This grave is surrounded by those of his beloved wife Ann, the Hastings
family of Stainforth.
William and his brother Robert (mentioned before) were born in Whitgift,
(their mother's home) but grew up in Stainforth. William married a local
girl Ann Hastings, her father was Stainforth lock keeper for a number
of years, and their association with Stainforth can be traced back many
generations. As a young man William like his brother Robert was a Stainforth
Keelman, but he was also a great businessman and was soon investing
money in land based projects. He built the Great Northern Hotel in Goole
(still extant) and a number of properties in Hook near Goole. He eventually
acquired a large house and gardens, complete with servants in Hook.
The daughters of this family married well, and for many generations
the children carried the name Turgoose as a middle name.
Some of the ships owned by The Turgoose family of Stainforth
NSG refers to Beverley Archive. ( I have removed the name of other subsequent
owners of these ships unless the names are familiar such as Clegg and
Warfolk) The ships were owned by different people and were always being
sold on or bought in partnerships.

"As late as 1870 the name of Goole was carried as the home port
on 457 craft, of which 439 were sailing vessels. Many of the ship owners
were local men who were in other business too. Of the fifty or so shipowners
who lived in Goole then the principal owners were William Turgoose (16
ships) the real number seems to be 23) William Cass, the town Doctor
(10 ships) William Wood William Holdsworth, Robert Briggs, Israel Jackson
Robert Hickman Thomas Clegg, Eli Jackson and John Sayle"
William Turgoose was a Captain listed with the firm France
Fenwick in Goole.
William's daughter Ann married John Silvester of Stainforth,
and with an eye to family history called their children William Turgoose
Silvester and Henry Portington Silvester.
The Portington family became Lords of the Manor of Barnby Dun, but that's
another story.
