Introduction |
Six years ago I wrote an article for the Stainforth 2001 site, in which I outlined the ambitious plans unveiled by Richard Budge's 'Coal Power' company for a ' Power Park ' at Hatfield Colliery.
At that time Hatfield Colliery faced a very uncertain future but had somehow managed to survive through an extremely turbulent past during which it narrowly escaped being closed forever.
See page 2 of this article 'The Last 25 Years' for a brief look at Hatfield Colliery's recent history, which has a short film produced by British Coal prior to the mass closures of the early 1990's, as well pdf versions of South Yorkshire Coal's annual report brochures. |
| It is now August 2008 and work has been in progress at Hatfield Colliery for over a year. The area around the colliery has been changed beyond recognition, with a new entrance road being opened at the south end of East Lane and large portions of the old spoil heaps have been moved to create a grass covered bunding which surrounds the whole site. Inside the complex a new road system has been laid out and the ground has been prepared for the planned Power Park . |

| Integral to this work is the planned IGCC power plant, which is to occupy the land adjacent to the colliery shafts. In August 2003 the colliery's owners were granted permission to construct and operate a 430 MW power station, as described in the article mentioned above and which is still available from a link on the Links, downloads & thanks page |

In March 2008, after the colliery had already begun to wind coal again, Richard Budge's new company 'Powerfuel', the successor to Coal Power, announced that they had submitted an application to increase the electricity generating potential of the proposed power station to 900 MW. A brief outline of the proposal can be found here: Non technical summary and on the Local assesment page we look at how the proposal may affect Stainforth and the local area.

| The aim of this article is to provide you with a background on Hatfield Colliery's recent history, the details behind Powerfuel's planned 900 MW Power Generating Station - which includes assessments of noise, vibration and pollution levels in both technical and non technical formats, and the opportunity to appraise for yourself the effect such a development will have on Stainforth and the surrounding area, and the people who call this often neglected part of Doncaster, 'home'. |
