I've been toying with the idea of a Forum for the Stainforth, Thorne and Hatfield area for some time. I thought it would be a great place for people to talk about what's on the local agenda and also just for general chat. So, click on the link below, take a look, and tell me what you think of STH. Hey there Robbo!!! Glad it was you in the earlier email and that you remember me and Helen. The Swift is still moored in the same spot I think but I wasn't game to go and visit her when I was in Donny last (in '98) as my mum and dad had told me that she had gone down hill a fair bit since we left her in the early 80's. What have you been up to over the past 20 or so years? From the emails, it looks like you've got a son (it sounds like he's cheeky like his dad was too!!). If you're ever in Australia, look us up. I'll have to tell Helen we've made contact. She'll probably want to send you an email. Take care. Cheers, Claire.

What a wonderful site! A comprehensive pocket history of the land of our birth, and so much more than "just another decaying pit village". I still pop over the bridge on most days and either drive through or visit relatives still living in the vilage, with the occasional stop off for a drink in the Harvester or the Old Club. Although there are many hearts that are warmed by a visit to this site, including mine, the reality is that the world has changed. Many people now live their lives in fear, hiding behind locked doors and fearing the night. There are a few who desperately seek to re-kindle the spirit of the Community, to breathe life back into the old ways, when neighbours took care of each other, when the door was always open and people took time to talk. Unfortunatley, they are all too few and far between. I hope that this site may act as tha catalyst to a new awakening in the collective fighting spirit of the people of Stainforth, and that they remember that there is strength in unity. Anywhere that has arosed the passions in so many should be worth saving as a beacon of hopr for the future. All the best to all Stainy folk, both here and abroad, Dave Madill.

One of my ancestors, one Robert Reader (wife Saray or Sarah), was the Grave of Stainforth at the close of 17th century. There are many references to him in the Manor Court rolls of Hatfield. As I understand it the title of Grave made him a kind of caretaker of the Lord's lands in and around the village, as well as an arbiter of boundary disputes between the leaseholders who farmed the land. He died about 1708. His son Robert (II) moved to Whitgift on the Humber and then to Blacktoft, from where his son Robert(III)left for America about 1769. Do you know anyone who might have information about this READER (or REEDER) family before 1700? I believe some of them lived in Thorne also. I would like to find out if they had lived in the area previously, or migrated there from another part of Yorkshire, or another county. Great website!

Does any body remember The Slipper as it was called in them days. Not seen it mentioned.

very interesting reading about the 1939 hatfield colliery cage crash adge. could we have more old photographs please. ***** I'm hoping to add some old photographs soon, but I have to be careful that I don't infringe anyone else's copyright! Usually old photographs belong to someone else and you can't just stick them on your web site without permission! I always try to obtain permission to use any photographs that aren't mine, but sometimes it's a little difficult to find who holds the copyright for an image. So, if anyone has any old photographs of the village or of the people of Stainforth - please send them along! Adge. *****

Forgot to mention on the last message, I was glad to here that the Pye family was metioned. Some will be aware we were related to the Pye's. The Pyes are still about the village espesially and recently I have also met one of the younger one's (Dominic) named after a older family member they are still a good bunch needless to say. A few of them have moved on to Blackpool now. In Blackpool people also so know a bit of the family and the wrestling matches that took place. Keep up the good work on the site

I took at a look at this site as a link from another. I only meant to have a browse but once I got into it I was on for hours. I was able to print out lots of info so I could show my children were I was borne and brought up at. What a grate place Stainforth was, and what a lot of memories I have of this place, some of which I have never looked back on before. Sue

Adge Excellent story on Dr Anderson and the cage crash. Karl Kennedy's grandad Steve Nesbit lived with his parents in Stanley Gardens about No25 I think. We used to cut through their garden heading for the junior school and the old village. I see there is a gav rourke letter another name from Stanley Gardens. Keep up the good work Val Weir

Absolutely great site - came across it from the Doncaster FHS and will visit it more often. I was born in Stainforth, East Lane in the 1930's, then we moved to Dunscroft and lived in Hampton Road. Other people living in Hampton Road about 1939 onwards were the Parker family, and we lived next door to a family called Banks and next to them were a very nice family called Jones - all boys - much older than we were, but were always very nice to us. We then moved from Hampton Road in the 1940's to Main View,Thorne Road, Stainforth. We lived right opposite the tip and just beyond Flat Tops going in the direction of Thorne. I left Stainforth in 1950's to join the services, and never went back to live there. However, my family stayed in the area, but unfortunately my sisters, Josephine and Mary, and brother Michael have all now passed away. There are a large number of my nieces and nephews still living in Stainforth, Thorne and Hatfield and I visit from time to time. It was great just reading of people who lived in Stainforth and who now live thousands of miles away, but are still interested. I am rambling on a bit, but want you to know its a fanastic web site and even though I'm just entering my 70's I am an avid silver surfer!!!!! Cathy
