So much work has gone into it. The history of the canal, keelman and the village itself on this website is fantastic. What a shame Stainy now seems to be a shadow of its former self a century or so ago. I lived in Stainy at the Basin, East Bank on a barge (MV Swift) for about 5 years (1976-1981)with my mum and dad (Judy and Bob Byron - used to work at Hatfield Main) and my twin sister, Helen, after moving from London. Me and my sister went to Kirton Lane school and then Stainforth Middle School. I wondered if the J Fowler and Alan Robson that have posted messages are Joanne Fowler and Alan Robson (Robbo) that we went to school with. Moved to Donny when I was about 13 and emigrated to Australia in '86 when I was 18. I have to agree with the person who stated that Stainyites do not like outsiders. As Londoners living on a barge in Stainy, me and Helen copped some stick at school but I think we managed to hold our own. I remember 'old Mr Footit in the farm near the Basin, Mr and Mrs Wilson on East Bank, the one-armed old guy who owned the little shop near the market, the New Inn and the Fox (haunts of mum and dads when Helen Cross?? ran the New Inn and Alex Jeffries ran the Fox. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me or my family. Name: rubber duck City: stainforth Sent: 25/11 08:31 does anyone remember any cb handles from the cb days of the early eighties.i sometimes wonder what those folk are doing today i shouldnt think they are still transmitting. Name: Phil City: Doncaster Sent: 08/11 08:12 Couldn't believe that old Stainy would have their own website. Big Alreet to everyone who knows me from Hatty High. Used to work with Mrs Hodges and Mr Pittard. Keep up the good work. Name: Mick Bailey Sent: 31/10 18:57 I've just read with amusement some comments from your absolutely astoundingly good village web site. Firstly, my brother Nick has posted some comments regarding our childhood which I can only hope he will expand on along with all my other brothers(but leave the nut-tree incident out Nick). For ours was no ordinary childhood. Ours was a childhood of adventures, exploits, incidents and yes, accidents. But above all, our childhood moulded the way we all conduct oursleves now. Stainforth gave us a unique upbringing where neighbours cared for neighbours and humour was king. I now live in a neighbourhood which in many ways looks down on the village 2 miles away over the fields. But I can't wait to get out and I can't wait to get back. I wear my roots like a badge and am proud, other people should do the same and see what can be gained from such an upbringing, such a village.
