Name: Peter Sent: 15/04 12:56 Well done on your work on the Inns and Clubs of Stainforth. I remember clearly about the rumour about the beer at the Fox! Do you remember that when Alick Jeffrey, the famous Doncaster Rovers footballer became Landlord of the Fox in 1974 he placed an advert in the local newspaper stating the Sheriff had arrived in town and cleared the Indians away! He was referring to a group of people he did not like who had made the Fox their base. However, the next week this group of people had placed their own ad' in the paper and they encouraged people to visit them at their new "reservation" which was the Welfare! Memourable Times! Name: Bert Sent: 12/04 17:27 Is the current Mayor of Stainy anything to do with the same Troops family mentioned by Pam . The elderly gave youngsters of to-day a great deal to be proud of, they could reciprocate by trying to make the village a safer place for them to reside and again walk the streets I know most of the young are good kids . Lecture over I have just spent a very pleasant hour browsing this website once again well done Adge . Name: adrian beecham Homepage: http://www.gmt-on-the.net/ City: stainforth/dunscroft Sent: 09/04 10:21 my father (George Beecham) worked at hatfield all his life nearly my mum was well known locally (Betty Beecham) i myself worked down hatfield (81-90ish) its nice to see my local villages on the net keep up the good work Adge Name: Joyce Barrass City: Bolton-on-Dearne (exiled to Southampton) Sent: 08/04 16:29 Great site, Adge! I'm a descendant of the Stainforth Barrass dynasty. My 4xGreat grandfather, Samuel Barrass & his brother Richard were the ones who founded the houses on West Bank (or West Cut Bank as it was called back then). Obviously I'm thrilled to find your fantastic site dedicated to all things Stainforth. Samuel's son (also called Samuel) married Hannah Turner & their daughter Charlotte had an illegitimate son, Thomas (my great granddad). Charlotte was born in Stainforth but had the baby in Chaffer's Alley in Hull & then went to live in Hatfield Woodhouse on her granddad Turner's farm. Tom worked as an ag.lab. all his life, mainly with horses (no doubt he'd grown up with them, pulling the barges on the canal). He married Eliza Wright, one of twins from Warmsworth, and they moved further inland to Bolton-on-Dearne & finally to Rockley Bottom near Hoyland where my granddad Bruce Aaron was born in 1891, (Anybody familiar with the Stainforth Barrasses will realise Aaron was a common name in our family!)I'd really love to hear from anyone researching or connected with the Barrass family, so we can compare notes and maybe help one another with the family tree! Keep up the good work! Name: Julie Sent: 31/03 01:47 Well done Adge (whoever you are)excellent website. So what is Danny the Red doing these days still campaigning I hope. Who is this Peter bloke who keeps piping up - he really needs to get a life. Name: JUNE MILTHORPE City: Milton Keynes Sent: 28/03 18:49 My father and his family were born and raised in Stainforth his name was Thomas Milthorpe and he had a sister Freda and a brother Kenneth. Freda married Derek Clark and they lived on Church Road, they had a son Kevin and a daughter Pat. After my father died in 1975 my mother lost touch with all my fathers relatives and if any one could give me any information about any of them I would be eternally grateful. I found the site facinating and I remember some of the places shown in the photographs from visits I made with my father as a child. Keep up the good work. Name: Christine Hemsworth City: Basingstoke Sent: 27/03 15:37 Hello again I can't believe how this site has grown. You are doing a wonderful job as many as telling you. Well Done and many thanks. Did you know that they used to build boats on the canal side and that the Warfolks and Barrass families would have great keels with lovely sails moored outside their houses? Does anyone remember the watersports? It is a great shame that so much damage has been done. I remember the Miners Welfare, we as girls had to dress in clean frocks and have our hair brushed to go and watch Grandpa Bates play bowls in the lovely gardens behind the building. Those were the days. Stainforth has an interesting history thank you for reminding us all. Name: Brumpton City: Stainforth Sent: 27/03 13:28 Well done for creating such a good website.I am now 46 & left Stainforth when I was 18 but I still come back to visit regularly! It's nice to know that someone cares enough about the old place to put all the effort into creating this site which I for one have thoroughly enjoyed! Name: Ron Carr City: Adelaide, South Australia Sent: 24/03 02:21 G'day I have recently made contact (after 40 -odd years) with David Hardy who lived next door to me on Lloyds Terrace in Dunscroft. He pointed this site out to me and I am glad he did. Congratulations to the designer - so informative. My dad worked at the mine for 48 years and was a member at the "Demi" and "Aubrey's" and so I got my trips out to Cleethorpes. Mam's family lived around Stainforth (Emerson Avenue and on Silver Street)and I fequented those areas often as a kid. I also was sent shoppng over the bridge to the Co-op and I always got my shoes from Waterfield's. Regards Ron Name: Alan Stainforth City: Montreal Quebec Canada Sent: 19/03 09:23 What can you tell me about the origin of my family name? Is there a family website? Name: David Hardy City: Montreal,Canada Sent: 17/03 12:40 Thanks to Olive Bell I found this site and find it so enjoyable.I lived just over the bridge in Dunscroft, on LLoyds Terrace and my father worked down the mine for over forty years. Our neighbour, Mr. Pedley, was one of the survivors of the 1939 accident and had one of his legs amputated, yet he had such a positive attitude. Thanks for the good memories ! Name: Gladys Martin City: Carlisle, Pa. 17013 USA Sent: 15/03 20:17 I was born in Stainforth and my brother (Barrie) lives on Nutfinch Grove. Name: Gladys Martin Sent: 15/03 20:15 Name: June Firth (nee Weir) City: Gympie, Queensland, Australia Sent: 15/03 07:55 What a wonderful site! I was born in Stainforth and all the old pictures were parts of my childhood.I went to junior school at Junction Rd, and then to Thorne Grammar School on an 11+ scholarship. I left Stainforth to go nursing in 1950 and lived in Upton when I married. We came to Australia in 1968 and I have returned only once in 1978. From your comprehensive history I learned of a Stainforth I did not know...both ancient and modern!!The Weir,Baker,Knott,Pye and Beaumont families were part of the fabric of Stainforth! All the men have worked at Hatfield Main in various capacities over the years. My mother Mary(Harriet Agnes)died there last year and my sister (Sheila Woods)still lives there. A wonderful trip down memory lane. Name: Gary Martin City: Scottsdale, AZ Sent: 14/03 22:15 What a wonderful surprise to find this site! My name is Gary Martin, I was born in Stainforth in 1954. My mom is Gladys Robinson, I was born in my great grandmothers house on Princess Ave. right at the end of Winsor Rd. I had one aunt and uncle that lived on Windsor, I still have family in Stainforth (my Moms' brother, Barry Robinson). My great grandmother was Fanny Churms, and she was very active in Stainforth. She was listed in Who's Who, Senior Citizens in (I think) 1977 or so. I can well remember the school, the market, the canal, the Pub, and the pit..Granny Churms was always telling me " stay off the bleedin' pit tip, the ground LL' open up an 'e'll 'ave you....." What wonderful memories...Thank You!!! My Wife and I moved to Blackpool in 1984 after the death of my parents, I have recently been researching the history of Stainforth,Hatfield,Thorne and the surrounding areas because I am in the process of launching a new site of my own (Hatfield Chase) if you or any of your readers are interested and have any information I could use, I would be pleased to hear from them. Yours is a great site. Regards Mike Jones Number of entries: 457 [ Back to the Stainforth 2001 Homepage ] [ Stainforthonline.co.uk ] |
