Evidently the new name of the school on Church Road(the old Stainforth Modern/Stainforth Middle / Stainforth Junior) is Long Toft Primary. The name might be Historically correct but what a long winded name. What is wrong with the straightforward name of Stainforth Primary School. It seems many people are trying to get rid of the name Stainforth e.g The Railway Station and the last thing that needs to happen is the local Councillors not promoting STAINFORTH.Who will ever know where Long Toft Primary School is? or is that what the powers that be want??

Anyone out there know of the whereabouts of Paul Burton who used to manage local band The Gents? I think he now runs his own Management Company which gets gigs for bands in pubs/clubs in the North he probably also manages a new band called The New Gents. Any help appreciated I really need to contact this bloke or his brother Martin,Steve Kendall,Glyn Davies or the other member of The Gents.

Hi, Thanks for the Homepage,it is really great.I was born in the area known as Hags Wood by the railway in Dec. 1937.I later moved to Dunscroft where I lived till I married.I married Mary Bird of 11,Large Square,Stainforth. Some of their neighbors were Featherstones and Davis's.There was some Covill's lived a few door's away.I worked at Hatfield Main For many year's.Our first house was at Beech Crescent.I left the pit about 1970 and we moved to town. Our children all went to the Holy Family school on Thorne road.My wife Mary worked at the nearby fish and chip shop which was built by Pat Bentham and his wife Jean.It was named at my wife's suggestion (Pat's Plaice). My wife's grandfather was doorman at the Central Club and my grandma was the cleaner there for many year's.She lived down the canal bank at the old loch cottage's.I remember she used to have to walk down the canal past Emerson's to a water pump every day to get fresh water. My wife and I were in Stainforth in 1998 and we met up with a lot of old friends.I remember we had a really good night in the Harvesterwhere I met my old friend Tommy Chapple who lives down Thorne Road with his wife Vi formerly Deakes. My nephew John Bailly also lives on the new estate. My wife and daughter Ann was also in Stainforth this year and had a couple of vist's to the New Inn with rellies and Patsy Featherstone and co.I hope I am not using too much space up but just hope that someone reads this and recognises us.My wife also worked at the chicken factory and at Stainforth fashion"s.As you can see we now live in Australia and we enjoy it very much. However we still enjoy visiting Stainforth whenever we can We wold like to wish all readers of Stainforth Homepage wherever they are a Very Merry Christmas and every good fortune for the New Year.Bert and Mary.

The Governments Inspectors have just produced a report on Stainforth Junior School(the old Stainforth Modern School) and it does not make good reading. They say the school provides unsatisfactory value for money, the school is currently underachieving, the results are low,the reports to parents are unsatisfactory and unbelievebly the Governors work hard but are not aware of the schools strengths and weaknesses! The chief culprits must be Mr D Elsey(Headteacher)+Mrs A Abbott(Chair of Governors). If Stainforth is to improve a strong base must be made and the reorganisation of Stainforth Infant +Junior School in September 2002 gives the area a golden opportunity to start afresh with a better management team to improve Education in Stainforth.

My family emigrated to Australia in 1975, I recently returned to stainforth and doncaster to visit family ,after 26yrs in oz it was a real trip down memory lane and we had a great time. It is good to see so many people making positive comments about Stainforth but I'm sure many look back to earlier times, better times? in the early 1970's when the Pit employed 1,700 men, there was a Chicken Factory and Clothing factory employing quite a number of people,a Swimming Pool, many adult and school football teams,an excellent Athletics track and Bowling greens, many shops down the village and 2 more pubs than today,a thriving Concert Society,a good Secondary Modern School,a Parish Church with a Chancel and Lady Chapel and a Railway station named correctly i.e Stainforth and Hatfield. O what memories!!

I have lived in Stainforth about 10 years and think it is a great place to live, my wife was born and bred in Staini'.I have been persuing my wifes family name history and since reading this site things are a lot clearer as to how things were around 1750 to 1800 as her family were here at that time. Thanks for a brilliant website, keep it up.
