Name: TERRY ELKS City: wellington, n.z. Sent: 07/01 15:20 Hi Adge/all. As an ex Dunscroft(Crescent)/Stainforth(Oldfield lane) resident now living at the other side of the world in Wellington N Z, I've enjoyed reading peoples memories and messages, like Keith Silvester I used to cycle to Moss rail crossing to train spot, also sit under the bridge at Dunscroft and train spot. Used to go to St Edwins Youth Club in the church where there now stands a supermarket, get my fireworks from Eccles paper shop near The Oval and get my gran a bottle of brandy from Kitsons Stores. Play all the old street games (rallico, tin can tommy, etc etc) under the first lamp post down The Crescent. Play 3 goals in in the gates in the Crescent street. Sad to see my old Dunscroft junior school gone. Congrats to adge for a magnificent site. cheers Terry. Their brother Alan lives in Fishlake. It was their Dad who was such a wonderful story teller, and who inspired me to do so much research. He used to takes us for walks along the river bank and he would show me where the ford was and about the railway, he told me about the people coming up river to market and not bothering to go further because Stainforth was such a good place to sell their goods. He made Stainforth sound like a magical place to me. Thanks again Adge for this site it is wonderful to share old memories, I nearly said with stranger but were not are we we are all "Old Stainforthians" Cheers Christine Name: Bert Cattermole City: Perth,Western Australia Sent: 09/12 06:05 Christine,Arthur Yeardly was a fitter at the pit when I was there. He was married to a Kath Hemsworth who had a older sister called Jean and they all live over here in Perth.Must be a different family.I dont remember too much about the dog track, but I was apparently born in a railway carriage there. It used to be called Haggs Wood as far asI know, but I recently got a copy of my birth cert.and that area is called CLONMELL.Nice to hear from all expats from Stainforth.Ron Carr may recall Marsdens grocery shop.I used to deliver stuff for them on an old iron delivery bike.My worst destination was the farm between the railway and Dunscroft school where I was always chased by the geese. They usually caught me too. That was about 1950 Ron,I used to go to Currans and Conways on Lloyds Terrace.Great to visit the site and catch up with the past.Bert Sent: 09/12 05:46 Name: Ron Carr City: Adelaide, South Australia Sent: 08/12 01:08 Dear all subscribers, I have enjoyed the little stories about the dog track -but can you also remember the roller skating down there? My knees can!! I was born and bred on Lloyds Terrace, Dunscroft 1942 and lived there 'til 1960. My memories as the proverbial "little kid" (1949/53 era) take in the roller skating mentioned above, train spotting (from both sides of the bridge - when not swinging on the lampost opposite the signal box), tadpoling in Morley's field (adjacent to the station (Dunscroft side) etc, etc They were the days when all was relatively clean (soot affected washing excepted), fun and safe! Yes we were chased by old Morley and we used to run like the clappers when we saw the bobby coming along on his bike when we were playing football on Lloyds Terrace because that was a "no-no". I have visited Dunscroft/Stainforth several times since 1960 and I am afraid I have not liked what I have seen - especially the last time in 2001. I still reckon you have a top site going for you Adge. Ron Name: Christine Hemsworth City: Peterborough Sent: 07/12 05:24 I am sory that I can't help with the dog track memories I wasn't allowed to go down there. (Then why do I remember climbing up the sleepers to see what was over the top of a rather ramshackle fence?) No Bert I don't know any Arthur Yeardley, who is is wife? Adge are we going to have Stainforth Christmas lights this year? Do any of you remember Junction Road Infants school in the 50's with Miss Sykes (shiver!!)Mrs Schofield Mrs Thomas Miss MacArthur? er and Mrs Cooke with red hair who scared me to death, even though she never taught me.Do you remember school Christmas Parties and presemts to take home. Mrs Thomas had a real coal fire in her classroom and she used to put the milk crates around it to defrost, then give it to us along with a cod liver oil capsule. (Bless her I am sure that she meant well) Len are you one of those Kids? Christine Name: tom scorer City: stainforth Sent: 05/12 05:54 stainy is ace Name: jamie burkill City: stainforth Sent: 05/12 05:52 stainforth is brilliant and is best for fishing on the canal and river don and all of the 6 pubs. Sent: 04/12 14:28 Dead right, it is about time Stainforth Council backed the Athletics club that does so much good. The land should be leased long term so that the Club could obtain funding in order to regenerate the grounds. I'm sure that it would to be politically expedient if they did support something so worthwhile. Sent: 03/12 15:50 You are right to correct me, it is indeed Doncaster & Stainforth Athletics Club. The offer remains open for local people to get involved in the running of the club as well as for people young and old to take advantage of the superb coaching at Stainforth.
