This is for Nick Bailey who asked about the Tippler House. (last October I think) I have found an old photo of Hatfield Main Colliery Staithe in 1832 and this is the place that I remember scrambling about as a child with the Tom Puddings rusting away by the canal side. In a book called Aspects of Doncaster 2 page 31 I recommend this book to anyone interested in the area. I sent for mine from the Information Centre at Waterdale Library in Doncaster £9.95 ISBN no 1-871647-57-6 but your local library will probably be able to get it for you. If not I hope to get a new scanner for Christmas and will try and copy it. The people of Stainforth have in the past given so much and worked hard to make the village a good place to live, it is a shame to hear these stories of its destruction. When I was a girl there was a prize for the best kept garden which many people tried for. We could go off on our bikes and go to any of the villages around (back for tea) and never be concerned about not being safe. There was a park where the Old Folks Centre is now with nice gardens. OK, put your hankies away, Do you remember Lani's First a coffee bar with a Juke Box and ice cream. Then a chip shop, I remebered them because here in Peterborough they do Yorkshire Fish Cakes, (fish fritters)and Lanis is the only other place that I have seen them. And what about Tuby's Fair every year? Christine

Good to see George Porter, our Nobel Prize winner, has had an Avenue named after him on the new housing development along Ramskir Lane. Reading through his various career details it is always stated he was born in Stainforth. Therefore it seems strange today that so many people want to disassociate themselves with Stainforth instead of pubicising its past achievements and strengths.

Hi! Christine, another tit-bit did you know that the cinema on emmerson ave in the late 1940s & early 1950s used to open at 9am so that the miners on the afternoon shift lke myself could go to the movies befor we went down the pit on afters good eh! also there used to be two prices one being the DOG END the seating was wooden and the other was red plush seats the price for the DOG END was 6 pence and for the best seats it was 1/6 pence there was a man called Mr Sennett? who used to throw us kids out if we tried to watch the start of the second showing we used to hide under the seats but he used to catch us most times darn! I can remember going to watch the Disney movie Snow White and the seven Dwarfs we paid to go in by giving two Jam-Jars or any glass bottles (I think they were short of Glass at the time)& paid at the side pay window near the exit doors right hand side of the cinema has anyone else got any tit-bits we should be able to paint a picture of Stainforth in the good old days to educate the kids of today we did not have to damage anything to enjoy ourselves another one can anyone remember the 12 to 4am Dances at the Catholic Hall next to the Catholic Club?? come on get yor thinking caps on I can think of many things anyway hope I've got you people of Stainforth thinking Regards. Around the pit the names of the streets are connected with the 1st Directors of the pit. e.g EMMERSON Bainbridge, THOMAS Townrow, GRANVILLE Chambers so it is reasonable to assume that Stanley was the christian name of an original V.I.P at the pit.

Can anyone tell me if there is or ever was a Stanley Road in Stainforth, and its possible location. I seem to remember Stanley Gardens and a Stanley Grove. Who do you think Stanley was? I would appreciate any help. I am going back as far as WW1 with this address. My great Gran lived at no.11. I see that the sitre has attracted a good deal of attention. Keep up the good work Adge, I check it out quite often and enjoy a browse through the pages. Pity about Kingsway, and a great shame about Junction Road School, I have many mixed memories of school days there CH

I agree with Ron, I cannot remember significant vandalism or out of the ordinary behaviour in the 1960's. However, if you look through History Stainforth has had its fair share of adverse publicity. For Example in 1921, a leaving resident wrote to the Doncaster Gazette that Stainforth "was a hotbed of drunkenness, squaler and spiteful tongues" In 1980 there was a campaign to take the stain out of Stainforth involving the local schools. In 1983 Ex- Councillor Gordon Sears stated Stainforth was the Toxteth of Doncaster, a comment endorsed by Ex-Councillor Ray Stockhill. In 1991, an article in The Star newspaper stated Stainforth by night,is a township where law abiding folk fear to tread. In daylight things are little better. I think Stainforth today is not as bad as this but obviously much work has to done.

Yes I remember the sugar in the blue bags we used to do the same (but this was not black market sugar)& make toffee lollies on a stick but we used to sell ours at 2d each they went in no time also the saying "back of Broughs" was a known phrase mostly when courting girls!!! where did you take girl friends "back of broughs" as I've said before we enjoyed ourselves in Stainforth no vandalism no hanging around on street corners etc etc just enjoying life which nobody seems to know these days get stainforth back on track and stop these yobos running the place & put your foot down. Regards. Ron

Great website which stirred lots of memories. My gran was a big 'Sally Army'person and I used to be dragged round the streets of 'Stainey' every Sunday on the 'Open air meetings. Also my dad worked for Broughs after the war and if we asked "Where's my dad?" my mum would say "Back of Broughs". Also I remember the cupboard in their bedroom having stacks of 'black market' sugar from which my mum made toffee lollies which we sold at a penny each, those were the days!!!

in answer to youth clubs when I was growing up in Stainforth there were no youth clubs & there was no vandalism we all enjoyed ourselves & Stainforth was a vibrant society as one person put it on the website lord street is like beirut this is disgusting, Stainforth was never like this bring back National service, which I did & give the teenages some disipline, it never harmed me and I was much better for it and so was everyone else, get them off the street corners and get them doing something constructive with there lives, the only other thing is to have a curfew all teenages off the streets by 10-30pm they should be in bed ready for school the next day, but do not forget these teenages are children and sould be treated as such, in my day you got the key of the door at 21 years of age it should be the same today, stop pussyfooting around with these kids and you adults put your foot down and get Stainforth back where it used to be a great village thats how I, and people like me left it to these ungreatful people of today, you should be ashamed of yourselves, do it today, not tomorrow, ask the older generation what stainforth was like, you all seem to complane but nobody does anything, as I said start today and stop winjing best of luck, from a stainyike from stanley gardens (ashamed)
